Before your ski day in Tromsø
  • Snow sets the start of the season. In the winter of 2025/26 a lasting snow cover formed on 9 November and stayed until 18 April. Tromsø Adventures offers an alternative activity if there is too little snow for its course.
  • Ski touring is not a beginner product. Both tours by The Natural North expect skiers who are confident on blue and red slopes. The night tour needs no touring experience; the day tour adds off-piste skiing between trees.
  • Winter clothing is rarely part of the deal. SkiTromsø lends a jacket, trousers, hat and gloves, and Tromsø Outdoor rents clothing out. On every other trip you dress yourself for a couple of hours outside.
  • Check how you get to the start. Tromsø Outdoor drives you from its shop in Fredrik Langes gate and the Lyngen day trip picks you up. The others meet at Charlottenlund, the ski stadium or on Kvaløya, and for the day tour The Natural North asks guests to take the local bus or drive.
  • Groups mix levels. On the cross-country courses, the point of criticism that comes up on the booking pages is that newcomers and faster skiers share one group and one pace.
  • No downhill lessons here. This site compares guided cross-country, backcountry, touring and family sessions. Lift-served downhill skiing is not part of it.

What to wear and what is provided

When the ski season runs

Cross-country courses follow the snow: Visit Tromsø lists the Tromsø Outdoor beginner course from November to April, and in the winter of 2025/26 the snow cover lasted from early November to mid-April. The Natural North runs its easy ski tour from December into May. Between late November and mid-January the sun stays below the horizon, so daytime courses run in blue twilight and many trails are floodlit in the evening. Book a course early in your stay if you can, so a day with rain or too little snow does not cost you the only chance.

Best time to ski in Tromsø

What skiers say

Reviews from the courses, the ski tour and the family evening, including critical ones. The complaints are practical: changing boots in an icy car park, a beginner trail with more uphill than expected and too little practice in stopping, and a sledding evening that felt expensive for what it was.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my beginner course with Marta as our guide. The instruction was really clear (although harder putting it into practice!) and the setting was beautiful. By the end of the session, the whole group were able to navigate small up and downhill slopes, and had I been staying longer in Tromsø, I would have felt confident to hire skis and keep practising alone!”
Laura · United Kingdom · March 2026 Beginner course with transfer · Tromsø Outdoor
“Changing boots while standing in an icy parking lot was not a good experience. There could be a better solution for that. The short introduction to cross-country skiing technique was OK. The instructor, Tuva, was nice and made an effort. At Lake Prestvannet, we were given a cup of tea and a piece of chocolate. That was also the only spot with a nice view. The advertising had promised much more. The price is too high for a few trips back and forth to Charlottenlund Park. For the price of the activity, you could rent skis in the city for 2 full days, go to the cross-country ski trails in the park on your own, and watch a video.”

“Never skied before - me and my partner were able to pick up the foundations over the day. Now we are planning a ski holiday next year. Really great course teachers with a lot of patience!”
Caelan · United Kingdom · April 2026 Learn to ski at Tromsø Ski Stadium · SkiTromsø
“It was amazing, our host was truly knowledgeable… she guided us through all the info we needed the best slopes, where to avoid … she had different sized sledges involved for the tobogganing and it was brilliant fun. My kids favourite activity was the the mini skiing … they thought jt was so much fun and would have done it all night if they could have. The warm fire, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows was a wonderful touch. We weren’t quite lucky enough to see the northern lights on the night we visited (cloudy evening) but I understand on a clear night you may even be able to toboggan under the northern lights. A brilliant family experience”
Katherine · United Kingdom · February 2026 Sledding and mini skis · Arctic Fun
“I found the trail a little difficult as a beginner. it's mainly up hill a little bit so it was a lot of walking with skis on. […] also the guides were lovely! so nice! but I do wish they taught us how to stop, slow down and steer before we went off and actually went fast […] as a beginner I found it a bit difficult and maybe the snow wasn't in best condition when we went (March)”
Traveller · United Kingdom · March 2026 Learn to ski at Tromsø Ski Stadium · SkiTromsø
“Rune is an excellent guide. Cool, friendly, and very clear in his explanations. Plus, we were a very small group: just my wife and me! A perfect day with a perfect guide!”
Aubert · France · February 2026 · translated review Easy ski touring day · The Natural North
“Had a fantastic cross country ski experience. Both the guides were fantastic and very knowledgable. It was lovely to spend time on such a beautiful part of the Tromso island.”
Reid · United Kingdom · April 2026 Cross-country course at Charlottenlund · Tromsø Adventures AS
“The sleds were not like the ones in the picture. We enjoyed ourselves and had fun but a bit on the expensive side for “just” sledding. Nice hot cocoa and chocolate. The guide was sweet.”
Rikke · Denmark · February 2025 · translated review Sledding and mini skis · Arctic Fun
“Felix was so patient with all of us who had never touched skis before. I was the first to fall and he immediately jumped in to teach me how to get back up. Pretty sure I've got a new hobby for life now, thank you! Overall, super fun experience. The hot juice and snacks were super tasty, but definitely bring some water for the ride home because this is quite a workout!”

How this comparison works

This site lists the bookable skiing courses and tours from Tromsø with the skill level each operator asks for, the minimum age, what is provided and where you meet. When you book through a link on this page, GetYourGuide or Viator pays us a commission out of their margin; your price stays the same.

Questions about skiing in Tromsø

Can I try cross-country skiing in Tromsø as a complete beginner?

Yes. Tromsø Outdoor runs a beginner course with a transfer from its shop in Fredrik Langes gate, for groups of up to eight. SkiTromsø teaches a learn-to-ski session at Tromsø Ski Stadium, and Tromsø Adventures runs a guided course from the Charlottenlund activity park. All of them provide skis, poles and boots.

Which ski course includes winter clothing?

The SkiTromsø learn-to-ski course lends a jacket, trousers, a hat and gloves together with the ski equipment. Tromsø Outdoor rents out winter clothing for its beginner course. The Tromsø Adventures course at Charlottenlund states that clothing is not included, so you come dressed for the cold yourself.

What is the minimum age for skiing tours in Tromsø?

It depends on the operator. SkiTromsø takes children from 6, Tromsø Adventures from 7 (and guests up to 80), Tromsø Outdoor from 12. The backcountry trip and both ski tours by The Natural North start at 14. The family evening with sledding and mini skis lists no minimum age.

Do I need experience for ski touring?

You need to ski well downhill, not to have toured before. The night tour expects guests who are confident on blue and red slopes and needs no ski touring experience. The day tour asks for skiers who are comfortable on blue and red slopes and happy off-piste and between trees. Beginners can ask The Natural North for a private tour.

Does this site cover downhill skiing?

No. The courses and tours here are cross-country skiing, backcountry skiing, ski touring and a family session with mini skis. Lift-served downhill skiing has no guided product to compare, so it is not listed.

When is the ski season in Tromsø?

Visit Tromsø lists the Tromsø Outdoor beginner course from November to April, and The Natural North runs its easy ski tour from December to May. The snow decides each year: in the winter of 2025/26 a lasting snow cover formed on 9 November and stayed until 18 April.

Can I go skiing during the polar night?

Yes. Several trails around Tromsø are floodlit in the evening, and the night ski tour by The Natural North runs in darkness with a headlamp in December and January, with a chance of northern lights. From February the evenings bring long twilight instead.
