Skiing in Tromsø follows the snow and the light. The beginner courses run from November to April, ski touring continues into May, and in the middle of winter the sun does not rise at all. Which months suit you depends on what you want: skiing under floodlights and maybe the northern lights, or long bright days on the snow.

The snow figures describe a single winter (2025/26), not an average. Other winters start earlier or later.
November and December
The first snow can come in October, but the trails need a lasting cover, which in 2025/26 formed on 9 November. Early in the season it is worth checking the snow before you book, and choosing a course whose operator has a plan for thin snow: Tromsø Adventures offers an alternative activity if there is not enough snow for skiing. From late November the polar night begins, and the floodlit trails come into their own. Which trails are lit, and until when, is on where to ski.
Polar night, January
Between late November and mid-January the sun does not rise over Tromsø. Around midday there are a few hours of blue twilight, enough for a course on the trails. In the evening the night ski tour by The Natural North runs in darkness with a headlamp, and on clear nights the northern lights may appear. From mid-January the days lengthen quickly.
February and March
In the winter of 2025/26 the snow was deepest in late February, at 105 cm. The light returns: the night ski tour runs in long twilight instead of darkness, and from mid-February Visit Tromsø advises sunglasses and sunscreen for the Tromsø Outdoor course. One beginner who skied in March found the snow not in its best condition that day, a reminder that a single week can vary.
April and May
The beginner course season listed by Visit Tromsø ends in April, and in 2025/26 the lasting snow cover ended on 18 April. Ski touring with The Natural North continues into May, with long days of light. The avalanche warning season on varsom.no runs until 31 May. The tours are compared on ski touring in Tromsø.
Rain, wind or too little snow can spoil a single day. A traveller on the Charlottenlund course advised against doing it on a rainy day. Book your ski session early in your stay, so you can move it if the weather turns. Most of the courses and tours can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start; check the product page for yours.
Weather and snow in travellers’ words
Reviews that mention the conditions. They show what the season can bring: rain on the day of a course, snow that was not at its best in March, or too little snow for the sledding evening.
“It was a great experience; the guide taught us well. I would just recommend not doing it on a rainy day.”
“Great activity! Even with really bad weather, it was truly fantastic. As someone who is used to downhill skiing, I thought cross-country skiing would be similar and easier, but it’s a completely different sport. Our guide was wonderful; she really helped us improve! The location was great too—it felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, but we were actually right in Tromsø, so it was easy to get there by bus :)”
“I found the trail a little difficult as a beginner. it's mainly up hill a little bit so it was a lot of walking with skis on. […] also the guides were lovely! so nice! but I do wish they taught us how to stop, slow down and steer before we went off and actually went fast […] as a beginner I found it a bit difficult and maybe the snow wasn't in best condition when we went (March)”
“We had a fun time. I hope that we can try again when there is snow.”
