Families in Tromsø can choose between play and a lesson. Arctic Fun runs a two-hour evening at the Charlottenlund activity park with sledding, mini skis, Sami lasso throwing, a campfire and an outdoor aurora cinema: play rather than a lesson, and the listing names no minimum age. For children who want to learn cross-country skiing properly, SkiTromsø takes them from 6 and Tromsø Adventures from 7. Older children from 12 can also join the beginner course by Tromsø Outdoor.

The Arctic Fun session meets at the Charlottenlund activity park, Conrad Holmboes veg 89, on Tromsøya. Over two hours the children sled, try short mini skis and throw a Sami lasso, and everyone gathers at the campfire for snacks and hot drinks. An outdoor aurora cinema is part of the evening. If the sky is clear, the real northern lights may show up as well, but no one can plan for that: one family in the reviews had a cloudy evening. The listing says the activity is not suitable for pregnant women, people with back or heart problems, or visually impaired guests.
The reviews raise points worth knowing before you book. One family found it expensive for what they called “just” sledding, so see it as a guided evening with fire and food rather than a ski lesson. And it depends on snow: one family hoped to come back when there was snow.
SkiTromsø has the lowest age limit of the courses: children from 6 can join its learn-to-ski session at Tromsø Ski Stadium. It lends winter clothing (jacket, trousers, hat and gloves) as well as skis, poles and boots, which helps if the children’s own winter clothes are not made for sport. A parent in the reviews wrote that their nine-year-old son was thrilled. Tromsø Adventures takes children from 7 at Charlottenlund; skis, poles and boots are included, clothing is not. Tromsø Outdoor only starts at 12. All cross-country options are compared on the page about cross-country skiing in Tromsø.
Two hours outside in Tromsø in winter is long for small children, even when they are moving. Dress them in wool layers, warm boots, a hat and mittens, and pack a spare pair of gloves: wet gloves end an evening quickly. On the Arctic Fun evening the campfire and the hot drinks give everyone a break. More on what to wear.
Both the Arctic Fun evening and the Tromsø Adventures course meet at Charlottenlund on Tromsøya. For the course, the listing names bus 26 to the Skoglyst stop and free parking. One family in the reviews described a short bus ride to the park. Neither listing states that transport is included. The trails and how to reach them are on where to ski.
Most families describe a relaxed evening and a lot of fun on the mini skis. The critical review finds the sledding evening expensive for what it is, and one family had too little snow; both points are about expectations, not about the guides.
“It was amazing, our host was truly knowledgeable… she guided us through all the info we needed the best slopes, where to avoid … she had different sized sledges involved for the tobogganing and it was brilliant fun. My kids favourite activity was the the mini skiing … they thought jt was so much fun and would have done it all night if they could have. The warm fire, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows was a wonderful touch. We weren’t quite lucky enough to see the northern lights on the night we visited (cloudy evening) but I understand on a clear night you may even be able to toboggan under the northern lights. A brilliant family experience”
“It was so much fun! The sledding in the park was the most simple, authentic activity we had done in Tromso. It was a short bus ride to the park, which was beautiful and well-kept, not crowded at all on the perfect sledding hills. Our guide was lovely, helped us put on the mini-skis, choose sleds, made us hot drinks and snacks, and answered questions about life in Norway and Tromso! Our son said it was one of the highlights of the trip for him, and we had a good time, too!”
“The sleds were not like the ones in the picture. We enjoyed ourselves and had fun but a bit on the expensive side for “just” sledding. Nice hot cocoa and chocolate. The guide was sweet.”
“Explained in a very understandable way. The guides were great and paid individual attention to everyone in the group. It was a lot of fun. Our son (9 years old) was especially thrilled.”
“We had so much fun thanks to our amazing guide! She was really friendly, chatty and took videos for us going down the hill and at the bonfire. If we got tired we could go to the hut and get hot drinks (tea, coffee, hot chocolate) and roast marshmallows which was fun! Thank you so much for a great evening!”
“We had a fun time. I hope that we can try again when there is snow.”

SkiTromsø lends a jacket, trousers, hat and gloves with the ski equipment. Tromsø Adventures states that clothing is not included. The Arctic Fun listing does not mention clothing.
Possibly, on a clear evening, but no one can promise it. The Arctic Fun evening includes an outdoor aurora cinema, and one family in the reviews had a cloudy evening without the real thing.
