Skill level: Blue and red slopes plus off-piste
Skill level: Confident on blue and red slopes
Skill level: Some skiing experience
Ski touring means walking uphill on skis and skiing down away from the lifts. The guided tours from Tromsø are run by The Natural North and start on Kvaløya or at a meeting point that depends on the option you book. Neither ski tour is a first ski lesson: the operator expects you to be confident on blue and red slopes. What you do not need is touring experience, because the guide explains the gear and the technique. For a gentler start, the backcountry trip asks only for some skiing experience.

Book on GetYourGuideA day of ski touring for skiers who are already comfortable on blue and red slopes and happy to leave the piste. The tour climbs about 400 metres and comes back down off-piste, partly between trees.
The meeting point depends on the option you book, and getting there is up to you: the operator asks guests to take the local bus or drive. Beginners can ask for a private tour.

Book on GetYourGuideAn evening ski tour from the Storelva ski stadium on Kvaløya towards Rødtinden, with no more than six guests. You need to be a confident skier on blue and red slopes, but no ski touring experience: the guide explains the gear and the technique.
The route goes off-piste but stays outside avalanche terrain. In December and January the tour runs in darkness with a headlamp and a chance of northern lights; in February and March there is long twilight.

Book on GetYourGuideA three-hour trip on wide backcountry cross-country skis, away from the groomed tracks, starting at Kvaløysletta on Kvaløya. The pace is relaxed and the trip includes a campfire with hot chocolate.
Some skiing experience is recommended, and guests must be at least 14. The listing does not state that transport to the start is included, so plan your own way to Fjordvegen 12.

The skill level is the most important line in each listing. For the night tour you need to be a confident skier on blue and red slopes, and no ski touring experience is required. The day tour asks for the same downhill skills and adds that you should be comfortable off-piste and between trees. Beginners can ask The Natural North for a private day tour instead. If you have only skied on cross-country trails, the relaxed backcountry trip is the gentler step: wide skis, a relaxed pace, and a recommendation of some skiing experience rather than piste skills. All three start at 14.
Plan the journey before you book. For the day tour the meeting point depends on the option, and the operator asks guests to take the local bus or drive there themselves. The night tour meets at the Storelva ski stadium, Nedre Storvollen 105, at Kvaløysletta, and the backcountry trip at Eide Handel, Fjordvegen 12, also at Kvaløysletta. Neither listing states that transport is included, so count on reaching Kvaløya yourself.
The night tour changes with the season. In December and January it runs in darkness with a headlamp, and on a clear evening the northern lights may appear above Rødtinden. In February and March the evenings bring long twilight instead. The day tour runs from December into May, so late in the season it has long days of light. Light and snow through the winter are on the page about the best time to ski.
Visit Tromsø puts it plainly: avalanches occur in the region every winter. The Norwegian avalanche service Varsom publishes a daily warning for the area from 1 December to 31 May. The night tour by The Natural North stays outside avalanche terrain; the day tour goes off-piste and between trees, so ask about the route when you book. Read the forecast on varsom.no the evening before, and follow the guide when a plan changes on the mountain.
The listings name a safety briefing, gear instructions, coaching and a ski guide, plus a headlamp on the night tour. Whether touring skis, skins and boots are lent is not clear from the listings, so check the product page before you book if you travel without your own equipment. Bring layers you can open on the way up and close again at the top: climbing on skis is warm work, the descent and the breaks are not. More on what to wear.
Ski touring from Tromsø has very few reviews so far: one for the day tour, none yet for the night tour and the backcountry trip, which are new on the booking platform.
“Rune is an excellent guide. Cool, friendly, and very clear in his explanations. Plus, we were a very small group: just my wife and me! A perfect day with a perfect guide!”

Not on the group tours. Both ski tours by The Natural North expect skiers who are confident on blue and red slopes. Beginners can ask the operator for a private day tour, or start with the relaxed backcountry cross-country trip, which recommends some skiing experience.
No. The night tour states that no ski touring experience is needed, and both tours include gear instructions and coaching. What you need is solid downhill technique.
For the day tour, no: the operator asks guests to take the local bus or drive to the start. The night tour and the backcountry trip meet at Kvaløysletta on Kvaløya, and their listings do not state that transport is included.
The Natural North runs its easy ski tour from December to May. The night tour is darkest in December and January, with long twilight in February and March. Varsom publishes daily avalanche warnings from 1 December to 31 May.
All three tours on this page start at 14.
